Understanding phase

Understanding phase in the recording studio is one of the most important concepts, in my mind. When I first started recording, I didn't ever check the phase, like the polarity buttons, and check phase on drums, or anything like that. Anything miked with two microphones, or a DI and a microphone. Can have phase issues between those two sources, and I didn't understand that. So, one day I got a call from a mastering engineer, and he said, hey your snare's out of phase with your overheads on your drum tracks. And I said, what do you mean? And he ran me through the process. He said, oh yeah, I got some other records from the northwest that had the same problem. Well, guess who recorded that one too. So, first of all, I'll show you the real basis of what I'm talking about. If you put two mics on the source and the mics aren't right next to each other capturing the audio at the same time, they may arrive at the mics at different times.
