Using Auto-Key to find a song's pitch

- [Instructor] I've had a number of projects lately where we needed to tune an instrument to a previously recorded track. We always assume most sessions are tuned to concert pitch where A above middle C equals 440 hertz, or cycles per second. But in some cases I've had sessions that were tuned and tracked at A 432. A lower tuning standard that has gotten a lot of attention lately. I've also had sessions where the band had tuned to a studio piano, or the piano wasn't at 440 concert pitch, or was simply out of tune. In all these cases we need to find out what the pitch of the song is and sometimes finding out the key to help players figure out what is happening for their parts. Antares, the makers of the infamous Auto-Tune plugin recently came up with a plugin called Auto-Key. Simply place this plugin on a track that has harmonic content. I usually look for a keyboard or guitar part. Something chordal, and play a bit of the audio through it. This will work whether you have the track…
