- [Instructor] There are several types of microphones that you can use to record audio, and knowing which mic to use in which situation can really save you, or rather, using the wrong mic can really mess things up. Just because you have a high-quality microphone for recording your podcast or whatever, it doesn't necessarily mean that your mic would be good to use on set. The thing to realize about microphones is that they capture audio using different patterns or shapes. For example, an omni-directional mic like this one captures audio in every direction. As you can imagine, this can be really helpful. However, it can also be a really bad thing because you will probably get a lot of noise and other information that you don't want recorded as well. I might only use omni-directional mics if that's all I had, or if I was in an environment that I couldn't control at all, like if I were recording a public event or something…
