Using music to tell stories

- [Chad] We're now going to shift gears a little bit to look at musical scores. This chapter is about the art of using music to help us tell stories. Since the beginning of recorded history, music has been an aid in storytelling. We see this in things like songs and operas. Music just has this incredible visceral power to make us feel really potent things, which makes it a great tool in filmmaking. Look at this iconic scene from "Star Wars." Here, Luke Skywalker is contemplating what to do with his life. We don't really see anything. I mean, watch the scene with the audio replaced with just sounds of an environment. (air whooshing) I mean, there's really not much going on here. The music tells us how to feel. (light orchestral music) It's the music that makes this otherwise nondescript scene, so epic.
