Utilizing EQ and compression on reverbs
- I'm never 100% happy with the sound of artificial reverbs, whether it's from a plugin or an outboard effect unit, they always sound a little off to me, and I want to do some post-production manipulation of their sound, so to speak. So by using EQ and compression, I feel like I can get reverbs to kind of fit in tracks better and have unique tones that work just a lot better for me when I'm mixing. So what I've got here is just the raw vocal from a mix I did recently. ♫ I forgive us our brokenness ♫ - And then I put some reverb on here. It's just the generic Deverb plugin that comes with ProTools. ♫ I forgive us our brokenness ♫ - So I specifically picked a reverb out that has a lot of high end sizzle, so one of the things I can do to attenuate that is put a simple EQ plugin. I love using these one band EQs. It's very easy to think about. I'll just do a little low-pass filter or a high cut, and then I'll figure out where I want to trim the frequencies off on the return to the reverb…
