The secret to "punchy" drums

- [Voiceover] There's a lot more to getting your drums to sound punchy than just putting them through some compressors. The best mixers know that it's how you set the compressors up that really makes a difference. So first of all, let's listen to this track. It has no EQ, it has no compression, all it is is just the raw drum track. (drums) Sounds pretty good, nothing special, but we can certainly make it sound better. And the first thing we'll do is, let's go to this compressor. This is the standard Pro Tools native compressor, and let's solo the bass drum, and add a little bit. (bass drum) This isn't the best sounding kick drum, although by the time we're finished with it in the track, it's going to be just fine. One of the reasons why I wanted to use this track is just to show you that sometimes you are forced to work with tracks that aren't quite optimum and still make them work, and you certainly can.
