- [Instructor] I just want to leave you with a quick note before we end our journey together. When we create data models, we need to put more thought into how those models will affect the people who are subject to them, especially in marginalized communities. There's more work needed to measure and mitigate the unintended consequences of our modeling. In January of 2020, we saw our first case in the United States where someone was arrested because of an algorithm. While there were failures in several areas, including on the part of police who failed to identify the suspect, facial recognition was to blame. Facial recognition has been a subject of much debate in the past few years, especially with the examples of the case I mentioned and other policing and surveillance algorithms. We need to take a serious look at the types of organizations funding and creating this work, as well as guidance from industry organizations.…
