- [Narrator] Now we will move on to discussing the case control study design. So you have probably memorized the study design hierarchy by this stage in the course, but here it is again. Remember we are covering in this course one example of a descriptive study, the cross sectional study, which we discussed in the last video, and in this video we are going to discuss an example of an analytic study design, the case control study design. So if you can do a cross sectional study with your data set why would you choose a case control study design instead? The answer is that you have to use a case control design when you are dealing with a rare outcome, and why is that? Since you have a background in statistics you probably already have a hint. When very few or a very small proportion of records in your data set have the outcome, in other words the prevalence of the outcome is low in your data set, it's hard to do the regression equations that you need to do in order to answer the…
