How to utilize an SME's time effectively
- [Instructor] The image that comes to mind for many when working with subject matter experts is you just sit down with them and get their advice. They'll be able to point you in the right direction. And you'll leave the meeting with a rough idea of what variables to use and what the relationships are. Then you just fill in the details. It's a common view but it's completely inconsistent with my experience. Subject matter experts are critical to the data understanding process but they aren't going to build the model for you. First of all, they're too busy and you want to make efficient use of their time. Also, while they'll have a pretty good idea of what's going on, their mental model of the business problem is likely to include just a handful of variables and very few, if any, interactions between variables.
