Manage LVM volumes and volume groups

Manage LVM volumes and volume groups

- [Instructor] There are limitations to standard partitions. For example, they have to be contiguous on the disc. If you want to resize a partition in the middle of the disc, you're out of luck. For instance, let's say we have a five-gigabyte /boot partition, a 50-gigabyte / partition, which has five gigabytes of free space. Next, we have a 600-gigabyte /home, which is nearly full, and a 400-gigabyte /var, which has about 300 gigabytes of unused space. It might seem logical to take some space from /var partition and give it to the /home partition, but that's not a function of standard partitions. There are disc management tools out there that, through sheer brilliance, can move blocks of data around and rewrite the partition table when they're done. Note that standard partition tables do not support this and you should make sure to backup your data first. Logical volume management provides tools for managing volumes, including resizing, combining volumes and moving them. If there is…
