- [Narrator] NFS uses various files on the server and client. We will cover them in brief here. Later in the course, we'll use the files to configure NFS. The slash ETC slash exports file exists on the server only and contains the definitions for shares to be exported to clients. The slash ETC slash exports dot D directory holds files that end in dot exports. Each of these files acts like one line of the slash ETC slash exports file. This format of having one share per file is easier for configuration management systems to manage. An administrator can drop a dot exports file into this directory and run export FS dash A and it will become available so there is no need to edit files. The slash VAR slash LIB slash NFS slash ETAB file records entries for shares, whether they're mounted or not. Every time a new share is exported or unexported, this file changes.
