- [Instructor] So you may be wondering why put phasing and design options together? Well, it's a good question. And let's start off by answering it by seeing how these two tool sets are similar to one another. They are similar in that they both control the display of elements within the model. So each of them is capable of determining which objects will display and when based on the criteria laid out within their respective tool sets. So how are they different than one another? Well, the goal of each of these tool sets is quite different from each other. With phasing, we're concerned with time. So if you imagine that your project takes place, a course, a certain length of time, and you establish key points along that timeline, then you're able to build your model in such a way that the various objects within the model can either be created and/or demolished at certain key points in time and then the phasing tool set is able to show you the progress along the way. With design options, you're concerned with variations on a theme. So your project is moving along but then at some point you want to try two or more scenarios to solve a particular design problem. So you're moving down a path and then it's as if there were a fork in the road and you might go to the left or you might go to the right. So it's possible you could do either one in the end but both are under active consideration throughout the course of the design options. So can these two tools be used together? They absolutely can be used together. It's possible that you could have a design option for example that occurs across multiple phases within the project or within a certain phase, it's possible you might consider two or more design possibilities for a particular scenario. So in the lessons that follow, we will start off by looking at each tool set independently in its own chapter. And then, in the final chapter, we'll wrap up by looking at a few examples of using the two tool sets together.
