- [Instructor] The phase of preconstruction was introduced during the rise of BIM in the industry. Previously, the contractor would have their subcontractors develop coordination drawings in two dimensions, which would then incur several changes and revisions during construction. With three-dimensional modeling, these issues can be resolved digitally prior to construction, reducing the need for RFIs. Preconstruction is the phase typically managed by the contractor where fabrication level three-dimensional coordination occurs. To do the work, contractors must disperse and collect models of varying development, link them together, and run clash detection scripts within their software of choice, which is typically Navisource. The architect's responsibility to this phase is to provide design intent models that can be a base for fabrication-level models.
