- 3D printing is the construction of a three-dimensional object from a digital file using computer-controlled material deposits, usually in layers to build up a model. It's one of the most popular topics I get asked about as a professional model builder. So let's talk about some of the most popular types of 3D printing to see how we can best use this tool in our process. FDM is a type of 3D printing that extrudes a melted plastic filament layer by layer to build up a model. This is one of the fastest methods and uses pretty cost-effective building material with a wide variety of plastic options. These prints do not have the highest quality surface finish, however, especially if it's printed quickly and or with a wide nozzle, the layers of striation are always very apparent and probably will require some sanding.
