- In the previous chapter, we analyzed the cafe chair number 14 and then built our own chair inspired by its innovations. In this chapter, we'll take a look at the innovative Zig Zag Chair by Gerrit Rietveld and created a 3D model in Rhino inspired by his design aesthetic. So the Zig Zag Chair is a contradiction, has a very simple form but in order for it to be structurally sound, it requires a pretty complicated method of construction. It took years of failed construction ideas and different prototypes for Rietveld to find a successful solution. Gerrit Rietveld was a furniture designer and architect, influenced by the De Stijl movement, which advocated abstraction and a reduction of design to the essentials of color and form. His most famous chair called the Red and Blue Chair, it abstracts the chair to basic planes and basic colors.
