Background and analysis
- In this chapter, we're going to look at another important piece in the history of chair design. The DCM Chair by Charles and Ray Eames. The DCM Chair, which stands for dining chair with metal legs, this was called by Time Magazine, the best design in the 20th century. It was designed by architects Charles and Ray Eames, and it was a revolutionary piece of furniture that was able to mold plywood to fit the human body. Like Tonneau, the Eames had the goal of making affordable chairs that could be cheaply mass produced. But the Eames wanted their plywood furniture to be comfortable, as a result of shaped surfaces, instead of using upholstery. This was a striking new way of looking at furniture design. The Eames started experimenting with this wood molding technique in the spare bedroom of their apartment.
