Creating text and logos with maps
In this video, I will demo a classic decal technique. A decal is a graphic image map, like a logo, that only appears on part of a surface. So think of an object with a sticker. You have the base material that appears everywhere except the spot where it's covered by the sticker. Sounds like it should be easy, right? Well, we're also going to introduce the ideas of alpha and channels, but both will be covered in greater detail later in this chapter. Briefly, a channel is another level of the material. One channel we already talked about is our diffuse channel, where we used color or applied a map. Now we progress the idea of alpha channel, which is a graphic used to mask out other areas, which is very important for decals that have openings or are oddly shaped. For the first technique, I will say I'm not a fan and I actually don't recommend you use this. It's overly complicated and it won't preview in the viewport as you will see, but we will cover some important concepts along the way.…
