- So let's start to design our chair. Throughout the project we will be illustrating the five different stages of the design process. Let's start by reviewing that design process. One we Define the problem, two Research, three Schematic Design, four Design Development and five Documentation. Our first step defining the problem is easy in this case. We are going to make up a client and a problem for this exercise. Our client is asking that we design a chair for the lobby of a boutique hotel in Hawaii. The client wants an accent piece that can be used individually and as part of a larger group. It should be organic and sleek in its esthetic and it should use natural materials. We've received some rough renderings of the lobby space. We can see that the space has a curvilinear quality and the lobby seems quite spacious. On to our second phase, Research.
