Downloading and installing Rhino for Mac

- Let's take a look at downloading and installing Rhino 5 for Mac. The first step is to launch a web browser and navigate to rhino3d.com/mac. You can see, I'm here already. I'll go ahead and click on this download link. This takes me to the download page. Notice here, we have two columns. On the left is Downloads for Windows. Obviously, that's not what we're interested in today. Let's look on the right here. We have stuff for Mac. Just one quick aside, in addition to the full version of Rhino for Mac, there's also an IOS app that lets you view Rhino files on your iPad or your iPhone. If you're interested in that, check that out. What we really want, is this Rhino 5 for Mac. I'm going to click on the link. Here, I'm prompted to enter an email address. Go ahead and do that, and click Next. Then I see this yellow notification at the bottom here, telling me that a download link and a license key have been sent to my email. I'll wait a few minutes for those to come through. I got the email from McNeel. I went ahead and clicked on the download link and copied the license key that was sent along with it. We'll use that later as we activate the trial license. In my Downloads folder, I have Rhinoceros_5.0.2.dmg. That's the installer, and at the time of this recording, 5.0.2 is the most current version. Yours might be a little bit different. To start, I'll just double click on the dmg, and this launches the installer. Now, the install is really simple. All I need to do is click and drag this Rhinoceros file and drop it in my Applications folder. That just copies Rhinoceros from the disk image to my computer. We finished copying. I'll go ahead and close out of the installer. Now, if we navigate to the Applications folder, I'll just click Go, Applications, and Finder. We should be able to find Rhino. Then, all I need to do is double click to launch. Since this is the first time I'm opening Rhino, OS X is warning me that Rhinoceros is an application I downloaded from the Internet and just making sure I want to open it, and I do so i'll click Open. Now, the very first time we run Rhino, we'll see this license dialogue. I have the option to Buy a License, Enter a License, Evaluate or Quit. Now, of course you can buy a license if you want. At this point, you might be tempted to hit Evaluate, but don't do that because remember, we got a license key in that email from Rhino that came along with the download link. I'll go ahead and Enter a License. Type in my name, organization, and now I'm going to just paste in my license key that came in the email from McNeel. This allows me to set up a Standalone Node. If your organization has a network license for Rhino, you would set it up under the Network Node and just paste in the address to the license server. I'll click Done. I'll also need to type in an admin password to finalize those license changes. Now, this is the license dialogue I'll normally see, as long as I'm using the trial version of Rhino. Again, I just get these options to either buy a full license, enter a new license, get a license from the zoo, that's the network server, or to just run Rhino. I'll go ahead and click Run Rhino. Okay, we're all installed. Now, that's how you download and install Rhino 5 for Mac. Let's also take a look at how you would Uninstall, just in case you ever needed to. I'm going to go ahead and quit out of Rhino, here. The first step for Uninstalling is to remove Rhinoceros from the Applications folder. To do that I'll just right click, and say Move to Trash. Then there's a couple other files we need to delete. The first is in my Library folder, on the Startup disk. To get there, I'll go to Go, Computer. I know, on my machine, MacIntosh HD is the startup disk. Yours might have a different title. I'll go to Library. Application Support. I'm looking for a folder called McNeel and there it is. Again, I just want to delete this whole folder, so right click, Move to Trash. You may be prompted for an admin password. A couple other files we're looking for are actually in the Library folder not on the startup disk, but in my user's Home folder. That's actually in a different place. Normally, that's a hidden folder. The easiest way to get there is to click Go, select Go to Folder, and we can just type this in directly. We have, first, the Tilde symbol, here. That's just a short cut for my Home folder. The we have /library. That takes me to the Library folder that's in my Home directory. Click on Go, and again, we're looking for Application Support. A folder called McNeel. There it is, just right click, Move to Trash. Then, one more. Last, but not least, it's under Preferences. This one is called com.mcneel.rhinoceros.plist Just right click and Move to Trash. That's it. That's how you Uninstall Rhinoceros 5 from Mac, if you ever need to completely remove it from your machine.
