- Many times when we are creating something in Rhino five for Mac, our inspirations aren't actually coming from the real world. After all, no designer or artist or engineer has the true luxury of working in total abstraction, so you'll often find the need to draw models that are based on reference images or scans or sketches. We'll use this along with the JPEG file, vace-reference.jpg in the Exercise Files to explore a couple different ways the import reference images and draw over them in Rhino. As you can see here, in my reference image I have a frontal view of a vase, and I could use this in Rhino to trace a profile curve which I could later turn into a surface or even a solid object. Let's jump into Rhino and get started with reference images. I'm going to be working in the front view port.
