Form and shape

- So let's dive a little bit deeper into our discussion about shape. Speaking of understanding, let me distinguish what I mean by form versus shape. When it comes to form, issues of structure, materials, and use are involved, as we discussed in our last video. Shape is a lot more straight forward. When I say shape, I'm strictly talking about the physical characteristics. How long is it? Is it curved? Is it thin or is it thick? Qualities like that. So shape in furniture design can be classified into four main groups. Orthogonal, curvilinear, composite, modular or sectional. The first set of examples that we'll look at is angular or orthogonal. This means that pieces have a rigid geometric form. Having an angular or orthogonal form, gives a chair a certain type of feeling versus say a very curvy, organic chair. We can see that here in these chairs. Can you see the straight lines? Or here, where we see the reduction of the form to very basic straight lines. And in this example as well…
