Furniture and the body

- In this movie, we will recognize the way that furniture supports the body, we'll look at how the chair has changed over time as a tool to support the body, and then we'll look at some standard ergonomic dimensions for furniture and how these are helpful to furniture designers. Global studies show that one average we all sit about 7.7 hours a day, and some studies indicate that people sit up to 15 hours a day. And that's a long time in a chair. While there's talk about how this can lead to an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle, it also indicates how important sitting is in our culture. Furniture supports the body in all our daily activities, such as sitting, reading, dining, working, and sleeping. This was not always the case. Before there was furniture, we still sat. In fact, the human body allows for a natural form of sitting called a squat, and this is still prevalent in many areas of the world.
