How furniture supports different activities

- In our last lesson, we looked at how furniture supports the body. In this lesson, we're going to look at how furniture supports and influences different activities that people do. Furniture can influence how people write, how they eat a meal, and how they carry on a conversation. It can also influence how we interact with each other, both positively and negatively. Since activities such as writing or eating are action based, furniture designers need to observe, to really watch and to understand how people actually use furniture. By carefully observing how people use furniture, as well as their relationship between their body and the furniture, the designer can create responsive designs that actually work for how people live. Remember, furniture design is more than just making cool looking objects. So, consider a table shape. A round table for four enables a very different conversation and dynamic than a long table for twelve, or even a small table for two. Consider a low table that…
