What are grid shells?

- [Instructor] In this video, we'll take a look at using the Kangaroo add-on for Grasshopper to simulate a gridshell structure. Now, a gridshell is a little bit similar to the tensile structure we looked at in a previous video. It's similar, in the sense that it has curvature in two directions. So, in Rhino here, I'm in the file gridshell-example.3dm, just to give us a rough idea of what we're talking about when we say gridshell. So, you can see I have this surface here, and if I look from the top, it's roughly a rectangular footprint. If I look back at perspective, I can see that we have curvature in two directions. I have this direction, and then if I rotate, I have the perpendicular direction, so we're curving in two directions, orthogonal to each other, and that is what gives a gridshell its strength. The difference from the tensile structure that we looked earlier, is that a gridshell, basically isn't stretchy. So, a gridshell would be made of a lattice or a grid structure…
