The design process

- So up to now, we've been discussing some of the general concepts behind furniture design and we've been spending some time analyzing four of the great chairs of the last 200 years. Now it's our turn to create our own great design. In the next couple of chapters, we're going to be going through the design process to design our own chair. So what is the Design Process? It's a method of working that allows us to leverage a rigorous methodology to find a solution to a problem, and hopefully an innovative solution. The steps of the Design Process that we're going to talk about are: Defining the problem, Researching the problem, Schematic design, Design development, and then finally, Documentation. The first step is to define the problem. Design is not just about aesthetics. In fact, I would argue that the primary purpose of design is to solve problems. And you can't find a solution until you know what the problem is. It might be as simple as a client saying, "We're looking for a dining…
