- In this example, we're going to be looking at adding a bill of materials, or BOM to our drawing. And to do that, first I need to select which one of my views, and in this case I only have one view so that'll be pretty easy. Select that one there. Come up here to insert tables and come down here to bill of materials. Click on that one there and notice before I do place that it does ask me for a template. I'm just going to go ahead and use the standard one that's already there and then I have the option of choosing either a top level parts only or an indented type of BOM. Let's just go ahead and add it first. Click okay and then place that over here. Now notice that this is going to be the top level assembly. So you can see here I've got this sub-assembly and then I have these other components and it's giving me the quantity for each one of those. Now, if I click back on this one over here, and I switch from top level only to parts only, then it shows me everything that's available or if I go ahead and switch over here to indented, it then tells me what my sub-assembly is and what components are belonging to that sub-assembly. So you have a couple different ways you can use or add that BOM to your drawing. So very helpful. We're going to be looking at this more in depth in the coming movies here; how to sort it, how to add columns to it, how to add some equations and so on. But that's the basics for adding a BOM and making sure that you got your part number and your description in there. And notice we do have a few items that don't have a description and the part numbers all look pretty good but the descriptions don't. If you have that situation you can always right click in that row and click on open that part and notice that information does come from the file properties, under custom properties. Notice nothing's here so you'd have to choose maybe description. Put something in there. Let's call it part one. Click on okay. Come back over here to the drawing and you can see now it says part one. So you continue doing that to fill out the description, to make sure your BOM is looking correctly. And that way you can easily find something in the BOM. Most of the questions on the exam are going to ask you to either sort the BOM or do something to it and then determine how many of a certain component might be there or what that part number is or changing or adding a row and then figuring out some information that's stored behind the scenes there. So that's the basics for adding a BOM. We're going to be getting into it a lot more in the coming movies. But that's the quick and dirty of how you add a BOM and sort it either by top level, part level or indented.
