- [Instructor] When importing geometry from other applications into SOLIDWORKS, one of the common file types we run across is the IGES file type. Going to Wikipedia, we see an excellent definition that gives you all the information you need. The main points for the SOLIDWORKS user that you want to know is that this is a file type typically used for manufacturing processes. It was last updated in 1996, meaning that it's no longer supported, and that it captures 3D data and 2D data, if required. With the expansion of so many free resources online with solid models available to download, the IGES file is an inevitable file format that you'll come across due to its universal nature.
