Installing DraftSight

- [Instructor] While this isn't specifically part of your SolidWorks installation, because it's available, I think it's always a good idea for everyone who has SolidWorks available also give them the free installation of DraftSight so they have a 3D and a base 2D tool available. And because DraftSight is also designed by Dassault Systemes, they work in cooperation with each other. You can literally drag and drop geometry from the 2D into the 3D and vice versa. And it's a free install so there's no reason not to have it and if you're working with customers that have SolidWorks and for example, auto CAD, 2D DXF, DWG files, you'll want something that you can view them natively in outside of SolidWorks. So let's just run through that really quick. We're just gonna go to my internet browser. I'm just gonna do a quick Google search for DraftSight and see what comes up. And you can see first one here. Download DraftSight. I'm gonna download the Windows 64-bit version, but you can see it's supported for Mac, Fedora, Ubuntu. I mean, they're really making this so anybody can use it. And it's a free platform so there's really no reason not to have it. I'm gonna go ahead and accept their agreement. I'm gonna go ahead and let this download real quick. Now, to use the free software, all you're gonna have to do is just register an email with them and once a year they ask you to update that email. Not really anything in excess of that, but what you can see here is I got an error because I don't have admin rights. Because of the way that I opened it. So let me go ahead and navigate to my download. DraftSight and let's run that as admin. All right, now you can see we're having no issues. So if you do have that issue, you gotta run it as administrator. You can see here I've got the free version. So I'm gonna go ahead and hit next. You can also use a professional version or if you have a professional package as part of your SolidWorks Network license or a Dassault Systemes server license, you can select that as well. But we're just doing the free install. Very basic works for everybody. Gonna accept the terms. Install. And that's pretty much all there is to this process. It's gonna run through the installation wizard like it would with any other Microsoft-based software. All right, and it's done. We just click finish. We don't want to buy. So we're gonna click no thanks. And we get DraftSight. We're gonna activate it, and as I mentioned before, you're gonna have to put in some kind of email address to register and hit activate. And there's gonna be an activation link that you're gonna have to open up. So I'm gonna go ahead and pop into my email real quick. And this is all obviously typical to what you'd do with many other softwares. See my activation right there. I'm gonna go ahead and complete that. And that's it. Now I can go ahead and open up DraftSight. So pretty simple. Really not much to it at all. And from there you now have the ability to have 2D viewer on top of your SolidWorks 3D viewer. And it's just a good tool to have when you're working with all different kinds of geometry and it's free. So there's really no reason not to install it. As you can see, it's pretty painless. You just gotta have administrative rights and have an email that you can register to the account so that they can keep track of it over the next year. And that's pretty much it.
