Using the Edit Flange Profile tool

- [Instructor] In this video we're gonna be learning about using the Edit Flange profile tool. So to get started let's go ahead and choose the Edit Flange tool right over here and choose this edge right over here. I can drag this up to whatever shape I'd like and it's using some of the default values we had the last time we used the tool. Let's go ahead and clear out this offset command so we're bringing it right in here, and if you look at this corner here, notice you got a nice closed corner, but depending on the position you have you might have something that looks like this and you do have the option of using this Trim Outside Bends command and if you do that and click okay it'll actually trim away that little corner here which is pretty handy. If you wanna make some more detailed edits to this flange, we need to jump into the Edit Flange profile tool. So to get back to that I'm gonna go back over here to this Edge Flange number two, click on that one, and say Edit Feature and then right up here you see Edit Flange Profile. Click on that and notice it jumps into the sketch that's creating that flange. Now what I'd like to do here is just move this box out of the way, and then spin this around in fact even hit the space bar so you're looking straight down at that flange. Or if you wanna look at it in 3D that's fine as well. So here's a couple things we can do. First thing's first, I can grab these edges and just drag them in. That worked fine. I can grab the length of it and just drag that in as well, or make it longer, and if I click on this little region here, you can see what's happening here. So over here I can also modify the type of flange I'm using by going back to that Edge Flange tool. Right now we're just focusing on the actual shape of the flange. So right over here I can also switch over and continue on to this, add on to the flange. To do that, I'ma go over here to the line command. And let's go ahead and click on this upper corner here and just kind of drag out a line, bring it down here and then maybe snap it back over here. I'm again look normal to this, make this line here horizontal, and notice right here we have an issue though. We have one enclosed boundary here, and we have one enclosed boundary over here, and SolidWorks does not know how to solve this. So what I'd like to do is come up here to Trim Entities, trim that line away, and notice everything gets highlighted in dark blue, showing it's one enclosed boundary, and that's exactly what we need. Now if you wanna be a good designer, we would continue or connect the dots here, so we have one little center line, so everything stays in line. We also have the option of adding in holes, rectangles, whatever you want to this flange. As long as we have one continuous outside boundary and we have closed interior boundaries, we should be all set. So I'm go over here and add a rectangle and a circle and that's just fine. And when you're happy with your shape, click on Finish over here and that will finish off that flange profile. You can, of course, modify the way the flange is created by going back again to the Edge Flange profile command and you can adjust the length, the profile or the flange position, you can push it to the outside or the material outside, whatever you want to do to modify this basic flange all from there. This basic shape is now controlled by this Flange Profile command up here allowing you to get back into that sketch. So those are the basics of how to use that tool. Once everything looks good click on the green check mark, and we've added that flange to our sheet metal piece.
