- [Instructor] SQL Server's Data Collector feature is a centralized database that collects information about the health and performance across all of your servers. It uses the SQL Server Agent to schedule and run collection jobs and then stores that information in a data warehouse which controls the retention period of the data. This makes management easier since all of the information about each of your instances and databases can be found in a single location. In this movie, I want to talk about setting up the Data Collector. We'll start with a little terminology. The Target is an instance of SQL Server that will serve as the central repository for the collected data. On this instance is where the Management Data Warehouse or the specific database where the information will be stored.
