- Since each node in an availability group contains a complete copy of the replica database, they could all be put to use. These are called Active Secondary Capabilities and they help take some of the load off the primary replica database. The first capability is called Readable Secondary Replicas. While technically the secondary databases aren't read-only, the secondary replica only allows users read-only access to them. These databases are still writable by the availability group in order to maintain parody with the primary database. Transactions are copied over and applied to the secondary database. So it's safe to say that they're still dynamic and up to date. By allowing users read-only access, loads can be spread out across all nodes in the failover cluster. This happens automatically when a feature called Read-Only Routing in enabled. Users connect to an availability group through a listener.
