- [Instructor] As a database administrator, it's going to be important to know who is doing what with your databases for a couple of reasons. First, you need to get a feel for how users are actually using the system. Are they taxing the hardware by running complex queries, or maybe getting into situations where they're blocking each other from accessing the data that they need? Second, by identifying peak periods of activity, you can better schedule routine maintenance tasks so that they minimize their impact on the users. And third, having a feel for a baseline, or normal amount of activity, will allow you to better recognize abnormal activities that should be investigated. Understanding user behavior begins with looking at the sessions and the logins of the server. The easiest way to do that is to execute a system-stored procedure called sp_who.
