- In addition to the Principal Editions of SQL Server, Microsoft does publish three more editions: Developer Edition, Web Edition, and Express Edition. So let's talk a little bit about each one. SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition is a free edition. It contains every feature that the Enterprise Edition contains, which is basically every feature. It just has a different license model than the Enterprise Edition. The license specifically says it is for development and test only. You should never put anything into production on the Developer Edition. So this was very nice of Microsoft to create a free edition for development and testing because I don't want to pay the big bucks for an Enterprise Edition license in development and testing. I do recommend certainly following the rules. Read and understand your license and follow the rules. Microsoft does have better lawyers than you do.
