- While this course primarily covers FARO SCENE software, I thought it'd be helpful to show you a high-level view of the gear you'll use in the field. Here's a FARO Focus 3D laser scanner. This scanner has incredibly sophisticated tech inside, and in general, the way these scanners emit lasers comes from a lens right here on the inside of the scanner. On the other side of the scanner, there's a beveled mirror that reflects the lasers out from the scanner at 90 degrees. Now, take this a step further, and the mirror spins really fast, essentially spraying lasers in an arch, much like peacock fan. All the while, the scanner itself servo rotates, peppering the room with millions of laser points. When it's complete, you're left with what's called a point cloud, or a cloud of points that can be imported into most CAD software platforms. So what if we have a complex 3D object we need to recreate digitally? No problem, the 3D laser scanning technician in the field simply scans from multiple vantage points using FARO SCENE software, stitches, or registers the scans together to make that full volumetric 3D point model. It can even model something as complex as the conduits and piping in this mechanical room and it can do so with millimeter accuracy. How does it do it? Well that's where these little guys come in, these spheres. The technician simply lays these out around the project site and as long as the scanner can capture the targets with its emitted lasers, then FARO SCENE software can register the scans together. It looks for the geometric configuration of these targets, much like a constellation of stars and makes matches of this configuration to pull the scans taken from different locations altogether. In this course, we'll learn more about that process and how to even register point clouds without targets under special circumstances. So let's get started with FARO SCENE and dig into this amazing 3D data.
