Create a service account

- [Instructor] Another thing we need to do is we need to create a service account for our web applications, all right. So here on my domain controller, we're looking at the server manager, and I'm going to go up to the tools menu, and I'm going to to select active directory users and computers, okay? So this is where we can go ahead and create users for our domain. So here in active directory users and computers, you'll see here that I have my domain expanded out and there's a users container. Now in a production environment, we would have probably a much more elaborate hierarchy here, and you would want to put this user in appropriate container, but for demonstration purposes I'll just put it right in the generic users container. So in this container I'm going to right click and select new user, and I'm going to go ahead and just give this user the name teams web app service account. Now that's a long name. You wouldn't want to log in with that, so for the user login name we'll just say SP teams web app, right? So we'll kind of abbreviate that down. Click next, go ahead and put in a password for this user. We're not going to have the user change the password. In fact, we're going to say that the user cannot change the password and that it never expires, all right. So that way it's just all set up and we don't have to worry about it. Click next and finish. All right, so now we have created that service account. The next thing we have to do is register that service account as a SharePoint-managed account. To do this we have to jump over to our SharePoint server. So here on my SharePoint server, I'm going to go to my start menu and I'm going to start typing in SharePoint and then I want to go to SharePoint central administration. Here, in central administration, over on the left I'm going to go ahead and click on security and then here in security I'm going to go ahead and under general security we're going to select configure managed accounts. And then you'll notice near the top we have an option here to register a managed account, so I'm going to click on that link, and the username is going to be Landon Hotel, backslash, SP teams web app, right? That was the user that we just created, and I'll go ahead and put in the password for that user. We're not going to worry about automatic password change. That would be the other option that we have here, okay, but this would be giving it the ability to automatically change its password to keep it more secure. In a production environment, we'd want to do that. For learning environment, we're not going to worry about it. So I'll click OK. And so now we have created a service account, and we have registered it as a managed account for the SharePoint server for web applications.
