What is metadata?
- [Instructor] So, what the heck is metadata? Well, very simply put, metadata is a fancy term for data about data. Here's a simple example. Meet Mr. Rockstar. Now, Mr. Rockstar has an actual physical existence, so we can consider him a piece of data. But we also know some things about him. We know his name, we know what instrument he plays, we know what bands he's been in, what albums he's played on, and what songs that he's had that have been hits. We also know some other things, like where and when he was born, or where he lives now. Now, all of these pieces of data about Mr. Rockstar are metadata. Why does this matter? Well, if we can capture enough information about something, we can use that to group, sort, and organize similar information. When you're capturing metadata, it's really important to make sure you capture enough information about your data to usefully categorize it. Look at these two cans.…
