Dealing with damaged, lost, or stolen gear

- Rental tip number 7, dealing with damaged, lost, or stolen gear. It's important that you thoroughly check everything for damage before you leave the rental counter. If you find anything damaged or missing while checking out, report it right away. If it's just cosmetic or minor damage, notable scratches or dents, a missing port cover or something like that, have the rental house note it on the rental contract. But if you discover a larger issue, you should definitely request a replacement. If you rent anything, you want to treat it, of course, with all the same care and respect that you would treat your own gear. Never leave video equipment unattended in a vehicle. Your film equipment liability insurance may likely have an unattended vehicle clause, which means you wouldn't be covered for anything stolen from an unattended car or truck. That would be considered negligence. If anything is lost or stolen during your shoot, notify the rental house and your insurance company right away…
