- For the most part consumer cameras won't really cut it for shooting the big game or covering a boxing match but they can be effective for shooting close coverage of solo action sports like skateboarding, skiing or surfing, or anything else where you can get in nice and close. Of course there are also action sports cameras like the GoPro but those are primarily good for action and unique point of view shots. However, when it comes to choosing a main camera for shooting sporting events we have to step it up to at least a prosumer level to get the features that most come in handy when capturing sports and action videos. Almost any standard HD video camera or DSLR is up to the job but you want to look for a model that has as many of the following features as you can get. First off, optical image stabilization. Going to be doing a lot of handheld work and we've got to keep it steady. Built-in ND filters are also very good to have anytime you're shooting outdoors, so that's one downside…
