- Another sure thing that will rob your production of any hope of looking professional is a repeated failure to use a tripod, which often results in shaky, motion-sickness inducing footage that's hard to watch, especially on a big screen. This common problem in amateur footage is even more noticeable any time you're zoomed in or shooting on a longer lens. Similarly, the popularity of DSLR cameras has led to even more shaky cam footage, because the cameras are so small and light that they're actually harder to hold steady. Heavier cameras are generally easier to hold steady. If you just have a simple shot, such as an establishing shot of a sign, subject sitting at their desk, close-up of a prop, etcetera, you really should use a tripod or some other means to steady the camera.
