- Shooting in great locations has always been one of the easiest ways to make your production look a lot more big budget and professional. All over the world in every city, town, and countryside there are local landmarks, buildings, neighborhoods, and other stunning and impressive visual settings that are already fully art directed and production design because they are the real deal. When I produced the gritty, nerd feature, Shelter, directed by Benno Schoberth, we had very little budget for locations or production design. However, with a lot of imaginative scouting, and a little charm and luck along the way, we were able to cheaply secure or borrow a bunch of compelling visual locations, that were perfect for the grimy, urban story, theme, and characters we wanted to portray. Another big resource I recommend you try to take advantage of is any place with a great view. Great views are free. You just have to be a little creative about finding one that you can frame in your background.…
