Manipulating the size of people

- This week on Pro Video Tips, I want to return to our ever present goal of visual storytelling and go over a few different camera and composition techniques that you can employ to manipulate the size of anyone or anything on-screen so that they appear bigger, better or badder. Understanding how and when to emphasize, exaggerate or down play size is always a good skill set to build. In narrative projects in particular at various points, we'll often want to make characters or props in the scene seem larger than real life to visually give the audience a sense of the story, character or theme. Setting up a shot in such a way that makes people or objects look bigger can indicate that`our villain is unstoppable, our character's triumph, show power dynamics between the players and the scene or it can just visually help portray a character's state of mind at a given point in the story.
