Mic'ing the speakers

- If you have only one or two external mics apart from your camera's built-in mic, you're really not set up to get a good quality audio recording of a musical performance, unless you have the option of plugging into a clean sound feed from the venue's mixing board. However, taking no for an answer is just not the down and dirty thing to do, especially when there's money on the table. So, one option that may work for gigs where crystal clear audio is not going to make or break the project, is to simply mic the speakers themselves. This is not preferable, but it's a workable solution that can be made to sound fairly decent with a little bit of know-how as long as you have a good live mix and speaker system to work with. To pull off this grimy solution you need to first place your mic on a mic stand about a foot or two away from the main speaker, and then run the XLR cable back to your camera's audio input.
