Why to use an Interrotron
- One thing I've talked about in a few other courses, but haven't gone into more detail about yet, is how to shoot a direct address interview. And by direct address here, I'm largely referring to your subject's eyeline. Rather than the traditional interview style that your audience is most used to, where an interview subject looks just off camera, this emotional, powerful style of interviewing shows the subject looking straight into the camera and addressing the answers directly to the audience. It's a unique interview style that was developed by filmmaker Steve Hardy and Academy Award-winning documentary maker Errol Morris. It was popularized by gripping documentary films such as "The Fog of War," an intense and probing interview with Vietnam War architect, Robert McNamara, and "The Unknown Known," which is structured around a fascinating interview with another former Secretary of State, Donald Rumsfeld, and also deals with the subject of decisions of war.
