- So we've talked about all the important things that need to be covered before you start shooting, but now let's talk about some of the things we want to make sure we do during production that will help the editor do their job. A simple but important one is that all footage needs to be clearly identified on a slate. Slates are used for sync, of course, if you're recording audio separately, but just as important for the editor is basic info they need to know to do their job effectively. If you don't have a professional film slate, there are plenty of film slate tablet and phone apps, and good old-fashioned paper still works great too for communicating simple visual information. So what type of info will your editor want to see on a slate? Anything that will help them better identify and organize a shot and tell exactly how that shot was captured technically in the camera.
