Add a product

- [Instructor] Once you've created your account, you're brought to a nice dashboard. Now there are lots and lots of things that we can do. We could create a product, select a theme, install some apps, or configure our settings. As a store owner, one of the most important things that we need to do is create and manage our products. I like to start by creating a product first and understand what goes into a product page, and then pick our theme and customize how our site looks. Once we understand what a product page looks like. So let's go to Products. And then we'll click on Add product. So we can click Add product here, or go to Products, and then Add product. The first thing we have to do is add a title and a description. These are pretty self-explanatory. I always suggest making the title as readable and understandable as possible. This shows up all over the front and backend of the site, so you want to make sure that you understand it in any context. So I'm going to type in the name of the game here. The name of the game is called, "Fry Thief", so I'm just going to give the title, "Fry Thief". The description of course, is the description for the product. There are lots of excellent tips on writing good descriptions. But my favorite advice which is mentioned at the very bottom of this article is to make sure that your descriptions are scannable, have one to two sentences, and then break it up with some bullet points. So I'll go back to my product description. I'll go ahead and type this in. This description says a little bit about the product and the story behind the product, and then gives very practical information in bullet points. Next up is the image. We can upload any number of images about our product here. You can drag and them in, or you can click Add image. Go to my Desktop. And here I have a few images. I'm going to upload three of them right now. So I'll select three of them and click open. When you upload images, Shopify will automatically make a few different sizes to use around the site. They might show you a smaller version on the shop page, and a larger version on the product page. The good news for you is you don't have to think about it and just upload one image. Your product images can be any size up to 248 by 248 pixels, or 4.2 megapixels. After you see the images display on the page, you probably think you're done, but there's actually one extra thing that we can do that's a free SEO boost. If you hover over the images, you should see a little dot, dot, dot. You can click that and then go down to Edit alt text. The alt text or the alt description is a little bit of HTML that helps both users, as well as search engines understand what is in the image. So let's type in Fry Thief Box Cover. I can click Save. And then we can do the same for these images as well. We have to add the price. Let's scroll down and add the price. We'll have a price of $15. And we can have a sale price of $14. One final thing we have to do is add inventory. We have to have some inventory, otherwise Shopify won't let us, or our customers, buy this product. Let's just scroll down a little bit more. And I'm going to say that we have 100 units available. And when we're done, we can press the Save button. Then we can click View to see this on the front end. And here we see our product. A nice, big image. The title, the price, the description, which is easily scannable, and our multiple images. You can see that just by filling in a few fields, Shopify has made enough smart decisions that the product page actually looks pretty good. It's still a little boring because we need to pick a theme, but all the content is here. Congratulations, you just created your first product.
