Set up Shopify payments

- [Instructor] Shopify payments is the default gateway for Shopify. It's based on a very well-known and trusted gateway called Stripe. So if you've heard good things about Stripe, you've heard good things about Shopify payments. It's very easy to set up and it can be done entirely in the Shopify admin. You don't need to set up an account anywhere else. You'll also get pricing breaks, without having to negotiate them, which is very advantageous. Let's go to our admin to set this up. And from our admin, we can go to Settings, Payment providers, and here we can see a list of payment gateways. At the top is Shopify payments. We see the little notice about having to complete payment setup, but before we even have to do that, there is a setting that I'd like to show you. Let's click on manage. We can see a few settings here, including what cards you accept, the currencies, how often you want to be paid, fraud prevention, the customer billing statement, which is important and you want to make sure this is clear, as well as the most important setting in my opinion, test mode. You definitely want to test all of your payments before launching your website. So let's go ahead and turn on test mode. Let's go ahead and add a phone number here. Okay, great, let's go to the front end and test this. I'll click the little eye icon next to Online Store. That'll take us to the home page. I'll scroll down until we see one of our products, and I'll click add to cart. Then let's take a look at the cart. We can see everything looks good here, let's click Check Out. Let's go ahead and enter some test information. And click Continue to shipping. We can see our shipping methods are working. Let's click Continue to payment and if we scroll down, we can see credit card, which is Shopify payments. Let's go ahead and enter some test credit card information. We can go over to this help document, Testing Shopify Payments, and scroll down until we see a few test credit card numbers. Let's copy one of these, go back to our check out, and paste it in. We can add a name here, any valid expiration date, and a three-digit security code. I'll just make that up. We'll make sure the billing address is the same as the shipping address, and click Pay now. With just one setting, we successfully tested the entire check out. Once you're satisfied with how this works, you now need to complete set up to accept live payments. Let's go back to our admin here, and we'll take a look at this. I'll go back to Shopify payments, and let's click Complete account setup. We're not going to do this in this lesson because you have to enter a lot of really personal data, including your social security number, your employer identification number, what types of products you sell, and your banking information. Once you go through this, you'll be set for live payments. Just make sure to turn off test mode when you launch your store.
