- Throughout my song writing courses we've looked at a variety of ways we can use modulation as a dramatic technique in songs. We've explored both how it can be used towards the end of a tune in a final chorus. As well as between and within individual sections of a song. One very creative and challenging way to use modulation is to continually modulate throughout a song and never return to the original key. The magic of this technique is that it never fully allows the listener's ear to settle on one key and makes the constant shifting of the tonal center a narrative device of sorts. We touched on this technique briefly in my course The Songwriter's Toolkit: New Perspectives. In my discussion of the Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". Where each section of the song is in a new key. The verse Is in A major, The pre-chorus is in B-Flat major, and the chorus is in G major. Now while the song is in three different keys the progression through keys is repeated a total of three times…
