Extending the second verse

- [Tutor] There are many techniques you can use to bring additional excitement to your songs and help avoid potential blocks. One of my favorite ways is to play with a song's form, song form is how we shape musical and lyrical concepts and give them function. I'm going to assume you're familiar with the basic elements of pop song structure, if you need a refresher, head over to Chapter four of my Music Theory for Songwriters: The Fundamentals course. These are some of the most common elements of song form, intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus and bridge. One way you can use a song's form to make it more compelling is by extending the second verse. Typically the first verse and second verse of a song are identical in length, that said, there are lots of songs, where the second verse is longer than the first, some songs that come to mind are The Zutons' Valerie, made popular by Amy Winehouse, The Beatles' She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, The Cars' Drive, Janet Jackson's That's the…
