Using repeat barlines and endings

- [Narrator] When dealing with repeating sections of works, in addition to using repeat text, you'll often need to employ the use of the repeat bar lines and endings. With Sibelius, these objects will not only look correct, but they'll play back correctly as long as you input them properly. The goal of this lesson is to learn how to input start and end repeat bar lines, as well as first and second endings to create a proper playback map for our example file. The first thing that we need to do to get the first page of this tune playing back correctly is change the bar line at the end of bar nine to an end repeat. So we're going to go over here, second system, second bar, this is bar nine. We're going to select the bar line that we're going to change. So for this example, select the right hand bar line in bar nine, and this is where the end repeat needs to be inputted. When you select a bar line, it should turn purple, it's kind of hard to see, but it is purple. Next we're going to go to the notations tab to the common group, and click to expand the bar line gallery. And from the gallery, choose the end repeat bar line, and Sibelius will add an end repeat bar line on the right hand side of bar nine. Go ahead and press escape to deselect the bar line when you're done. Next, let's use the same process to input some additional bar lines into the score. First, let's add a start repeat bar line at the beginning of bar 11. So here's bar nine, 10, this would be bar 11 here. And the start repeat needs to be at the beginning. So that left hand bar line here, select that, go up to the bar lines gallery, click start repeat. And let's add another end repeat bar line at the end of bar 24. I'm going to escape, command option g, or control alt g 24, this is go to bar. And it found it for me, so I know that is bar 24. And this is an end repeat bar line at the end, or the right hand side here of bar 24, so I'll select that bar line, go to my gallery, and choose the end repeat. And escape. Now repeat bar lines can exist on their own, but often they're accompanied by ending lines, like those that designate first and second endings. Ending lines are found in the lines gallery. You can press l to get to the lines gallery, or you can go up into the ribbon to the notations tab to that lines group. And click that eject button. It's called the more button, but it's shaped like an eject button. And the first place we need to add an ending line is going to be in bar nine, so you can escape out of that lines gallery for a moment. And we need to maneuver up to bar nine again. Here's bar eight, so this would be bar nine. And just go ahead and select bar nine, clicking in the top staff will do it. And with bar nine selected, press l for the lines gallery. Select the first ending line, this one here. And Sibelius will input a first ending line above bar nine. And go ahead and escape to deselect. Now let's repeat the same process in bar 10, this time adding a second ending line. So, next bar over, bar 10, select the bar. L for the lines gallery. And we're going to choose the open second ending line. This one here. Notice how its bracket is left open, it's not bracketed off like this one here is, that would be a closed ending. So this is the open one. So I'm going to click on that, and Sibelius will add the second ending line to bar 10 for you. And escape. Let's repeat the process a few more times, inputting a first ending line in bar 24. So I'm going to scroll down here. This is 21, 22, 23, here's 24 here. We need a first ending line, select the bar, l for lines, first ending. And we need an open second ending in bar 25. Select bar 25, l for lines, second ending. And now I'd encourage you to play the example file from beginning to end to listen and watch the play back map at work. Again, to speed things up, you can temporarily increase the tempo by going to the transport panel, and taking this tempo slider all the way to the right. And that'll play back really quickly now. Here we go. ("Für Elise") So through bar nine and back to the top, there it goes. ("Für Elise") It's going to skip bar nine here, go straight into the second ending and along. ("Für Elise") This time it'll take the first ending and jump back up to here. There it goes. ("Für Elise") This time it will skip the first ending and go into the second. And I didn't give you the rest of the piece. So adding lines is simple. They look great, and they function properly during play back as long as you accompany them with a proper repeat bar lines as we've done here.
