- I've designed this course to be for people with a basic understanding of chords and how to play them on their instrument. While you don't need to be a music theory expert, an understanding of harmony will help you better grasp the concepts I'm teaching. All of the music theory I discuss is covered thoroughly in both my Music Theory for Songwriters courses. I've included references to specific videos for my music theory courses throughout. You'll see them appear at the bottom of the screen as we go. I've also created sheet music examples for those of you who can read music. The sheet music is for the song examples I've created specifically for this course. They are not actual songs but rather exercises that show the different ways we can use harmony in our compositions. I'll be demonstrating each example on a keyboard so music literacy is not required to understand these concepts. For those of you that do read music, please be aware that the sheet music is, at times, not the exact notation of what my hands are doing on the keyboard but, rather, a representation of the chord being played. This course will give you tools to break out of some of your songwriting ruts. One of the common traps for songwriters is that we fall back on the chords and chord progressions we know. I'm going to show you how to open up your melodies to the limitless possibilities of harmony and find new and inspiring chords for your songs. If we think of songwriting as painting, then chords are the colors of your pallet. The more colors you have to work with, the better you'll be able to take the music that's in your mind and make it a reality.
